How the WIA (WorkSource/CCC Workforce Services)Program
Changed My Life
, by Louisa Duru

My name is Louisa Duru. I was born and raised in Owerri, Imo State Nigeria. I have lived here in Oregon for about 14 years.

Before WIA and WIN program I worked at Oregon State Hospital as a mental health therapist for 5 years. This job didn’t pay me enough to support my family. To make ends meet I had no choice to have to work overtime most of the time. Since I was working overtime it deprived me the time, which could have been being spent with my family. It affected my mental and physical health.

I heard about the WIN program through a career specialist who assisted in finding schools where I can take refreshment nursing courses that would fit my budget. Through the WIA program I received assistance with computer classes, resume writing, and job search coaching.

With the help of the WIA and WIN program I was able to be qualified to get a job at the Washington County Jail as a nurse.

Not only does this job pay more, I wake up eager to go to work guess what I eventually became Employee of the Quarter, last year!

Also because of the pay I don’t have to work overtime anymore. This gives me more quality time to spend with my family and friends. Now I can support my family down in Nigeria.

This program was a real learning experience for me. I have many friends. The WIN and WIA taught me that with people on your side supporting you will always make it in the end.

I appreciated what the WIA and the WIN program did in my life and I hope for continuation of funding so they can continue to help more people. Visit www.WorkSourceClackamas.org to learn how they can assist you.
